ADAPT MAX SOLVED THE CHALLENGE OF QUIET HEATING IN A SWISS MULTI-APARTMENT BUILDING

How can a powerful heating system be installed in a densely populated area while meeting strict Swiss noise regulations? This challenge was faced in a multi-apartment building in Winterthur, where the heat source had to be installed directly next to the building. The solution was ADAPT MAX — a system that enabled a complete energy renovation while proving that high performance, efficiency and quiet operation can successfully coexist even in an urban environment.

During the renovation of a multi-apartment residential building previously heated by gas, the investor set a clear requirement: the new air-to-water heat pump had to operate exceptionally quietly. Because the installation location was directly beside the residential building, the system had to comply with the strictest urban noise standards. At the same time, long-term sustainability and future readiness were key priorities.

Efficiency that preserves residents’ peace and quiet

Replacing outdated heating systems with heat pumps is an essential step toward sustainability. However, in dense urban environments this transition often brings specific challenges — particularly noise. In the residential building in Winterthur, Switzerland, this challenge was solved with the ADAPT MAX heat pump. Despite its 35 kW heating capacity and installation directly next to the building, the system achieved extremely low noise emissions, while also setting a new benchmark in ecological performance.

Overcoming challenges through innovation

A comprehensive solution was selected, involving a complete replacement of the heating system — from the heat pump and new piping network to the domestic hot water system. At the heart of the installation is the high-performance ADAPT MAX heat pump, capable of delivering up to 35 kW of heating power.

  • Noise and installation according to Swiss standards: The key challenge was ensuring extremely quiet operation of a powerful heat pump installed directly next to a multi-apartment building. The system therefore had to meet strict Swiss legal requirements regarding noise emissions in residential areas. With the integration of the NMS (Noise Minimizing System), ADAPT MAX achieves a sound power level of only 49 dB(A) — up to eight times quieter than comparable heat pumps — ensuring comfortable living conditions for residents and the surrounding neighbourhood.
  • Efficiency and power: A high heating output of 35 kW with maximum efficiency was required. This was achieved with the IAH System (Intelligent Adaptation Heating), which dynamically adjusts the heating output within a range from 10 to 35 kW. This flexibility enabled an outstanding SCOP of 5.82, resulting in very low operating costs.
  • Sustainability and future readiness: For long-term environmental responsibility, the system uses the natural refrigerant R290. With a global warming potential (GWP) of just 0.02, it represents one of the most environmentally friendly solutions on the market and ensures the building in Winterthur is well prepared for future regulatory standards.

Modular design for fast installation

The entire system was designed with a modular architecture, significantly accelerating and simplifying installation. In addition to the ADAPT MAX outdoor unit, a buffer tank and a stratified hot water storage tank HRB-F were installed to provide domestic hot water.

For facility managers and building operators, the solution also offers an additional advantage: the CLOUD.KRONOTERM smart connectivity, which enables 24/7 remote monitoring, diagnostics and system optimisation.
