ALL ABOUT HEAT PUMPS

Frequently asked questions

We believe that when it comes to choosing a heat pump and renovating a heating system, many people have numerous questions. A heat pump is a relatively newer heating system and might be less familiar for this reason. We are aware that choosing a new heating system is a challenging decision, so we’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions we’ve received from customers and later from our users.

About heat pumps in general

– 01
What is a heat pump?

A heat pump represents a universal system for heating and cooling. It’s an efficient and environmentally friendly system, easy to use, and more cost-effective than other energy sources. Users have no worries or extensive maintenance tasks with it. Its efficiency, compared to other energy sources, is higher, consequently allowing for lower heating costs.

– 02
What can we heat with a heat pump?
+

Using a heat pump, we can heat or cool spaces and heat sanitary water. Heating-cooling systems are suitable for all types of buildings, both new constructions and older ones, as well as for multi-residential and industrial buildings.

– 03
Who are heat pumps most suitable for?
+

A heat pump is an ideal solution for heating and cooling in new constructions, renovations, or when replacing a heating system. It’s an excellent choice for floor heating systems, operating on the principle of low-temperature heating. Of course, you can also connect a heat pump to radiators (high-temperature heat pumps).

– 04
How does a heat pump work?
+

It works exactly the opposite of a refrigerator or air conditioning unit. Using electric energy, it transfers (pumps) thermal energy from a heat source (brine, water, or air) into the heating system. This happens in a closed circuit where the liquid working medium (refrigerant) evaporates, compresses, and condenses again. This is the only way to elevate thermal energy from a lower temperature level to a higher one. The refrigerant remains within the circuit and is not consumed or released into the environment.

– 05
What is the difference between a DHW heat pump and a heating heat pump?
+

A DHW heat pump provides extremely efficient heating of sanitary water. In addition to heating sanitary water, it allows you to cool your cellar, storage room or smaller rooms free of charge. It can be used independently all year round or connected to any boiler/other heating source. Pool water heating is also possible. Heating heat pumps use three different heat sources: water, air or brine, while DHWs use only air.

– 06
Who are DHW heat pumps most suitable for?
+

Using DHW heat pumps with extremely low heating costs, we can heat sanitary water throughout the year. They are suitable for those who only require cost-effective heating for sanitary water and already have a solution for space heating. KRONOTERM heat pumps can be connected to existing heating systems.

– 07
Are heat pumps noisy?
+

Compressor heat pumps for heating are very quiet, even quieter than an oil burner, and KRONOTERM has developed a heat pump that is quieter than a refrigerator. We’re proud that our ADAPT heat pump is the first in Europe with nearly silent operation and exceptional efficiency. It’s essential to ensure it’s not placed near obstacles that could increase noise levels.

– 08
How much electricity does a heat pump use per year?
+

The most common fear associated with installing a heat pump is the electricity bill. The heat pump extracts heat from the air, water, or brine, requiring electricity only to operate. Therefore, the cost is significantly lower compared to heating solely with electricity. The electricity consumption depends on the size of the house, its power, and the type of heat pump.

– 09
What is the COP?
+

The Coefficient of Performance (COP) of a heat pump is the ratio of useful heat output to the supplied electrical energy to drive the compressor and other electrical components in the heat pump. High-quality air-to-water heat pumps have a COP above 3, which means that for every unit of electrical energy invested, we get 3 units of heat energy. Our most efficient heat pumps even have a COP of 8.48.

– 010
Is the heat pump also suitable for houses without facade insulation?
+

The heat pump is a source of heat, so its usefulness is not tied to whether the house is insulated or not. The payback period is often significantly shorter for uninsulated properties. Users frequently use heating savings to finance insulation.

– 011
Does the heat pump also work at lower temperatures, e.g. -20 ˚C?
+

Our heat pumps are designed to operate at very low temperatures and effectively function even at -25°C.

– 012
How often do I need a service?
+

For flawless and efficient operation, regular maintenance is necessary for a heat pump. Compared to a car, a heat pump operates 10 times more hours annually, running 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Similar to a car, it requires just one annual preventive service check.

– 013
Does the heat pump enable cooling in summer?
+

KRONOTERM heat pumps feature a complete system for heating buildings during winter, while effectively cooling your spaces during the summer months. In addition to heating on the primary side, these heat pumps provide cooling through active means (reversible heat pumps where the compressor operates during cooling) and passive means (ground-source and water-source heat pumps where only primary pumps function during cooling).

– 014
What is the lifetime of a heat pump?
+

echnology advances extremely quickly; even phones are replaced almost annually, despite still functioning. Our heat pumps operate for 15 years or more, yet many customers contact us earlier because they want a new one with better efficiency.

– 015
Does it matter where the heat pump is placed?
+

The position is only important in terms of wind direction for the proper operation of the fan. During normal airflow, solar radiation does not affect the operation of the heat pump. During installation, it’s important to consider clearances between the wall or obstacle and the heat pump for normal operation and service access. Additionally, proximity to obstacles and objects that could potentially amplify sound is important.

– 016
Is it worth buying a heat pump if I heat sanitary water with an electric boiler?
+

By installing a heat pump, you’ll get more hot water, and your electricity consumption costs will decrease by up to 75%. This investment will therefore pay off for you in approximately three years.

– 017
Why are heat pumps more efficient than other heating methods?
+

A heat pump has several advantages over other forms of heating. The most significant advantage is cost-effectiveness, as they provide up to four times more heat for the same amount of money. Additionally, they can be used throughout the year for cooling purposes. Heat pumps are safe and easy to use. Unlike fireplaces and heaters, they emit low-density heat, which is friendly for children and the elderly. Heat pumps can also be easily controlled remotely, enhancing your comfort. Another important advantage is that they do not pollute the air through combustion, as they use ozone-friendly refrigerants.

How much electricity does your heat pump consume?
+

Our inverter heat pumps of the air/water, ground/water, and water/water systems are among the most efficient pumps in the world, confirmed by international standard measurements and certifications. For instance, the ADAPT heat pump boasts an exceptionally high COP of 5.1. This means that for one unit of electricity it consumes, the heat pump generates 5.1 units of heat to warm the building. The lower this coefficient, the more energy your heat pump consumes. In practice, this implies that a less efficient heat pump will consume more electricity to produce the same amount of heat as our more efficient pump. Therefore, a lower initial investment in a technologically inferior heat pump may turn out to be a much costlier investment in the long run,

+

The monoblock system is a heat pump system where all essential parts of the device are integrated into a single unit. Such a unit is typically installed outside the building, while inside, there is the control system, the heating water tank, and a hot water tank if it is heated by the heat pump.

– 010
The offers I have received vary widely in price. How so?
+

In the market, there are many different providers of heat pumps offering various refined products. Consequently, there can be significant variations in pricing within the offers. Some might send you only an informative offer without a visit, while another partner might prepare a detailed list of equipment, so it’s essential to verify the items on the quotation. Indeed, considering the quality of the heat pumps and the components used, there might be differences in the price of the pump itself. It’s crucial to choose an energy-efficient, higher-quality pump as it will provide you with greater comfort and lower monthly costs. This way, you’ll recover your investment much sooner compared to purchasing a pump with a lower initial cost.

Quick technical assistance

– 01
Can a heat pump freeze?

No, it can’t. When there is high humidity outside, the system built into the heat pump will make sure that if it snows, the outdoor unit will defrost.

– 02
What should I do in the event of a prolonged power outage?
+

If a power failure occurs, it is important to empty the water connection between the outdoor and indoor units after 12 hours. This measure will protect the outdoor unit from a possible fault.

– 03
The heat pump is in error. What to do?
+

All devices sold in the European Union are covered by a standard 2-year warranty.

– 04
What is antifreeze mode?
+

In case of an error in the heat pump, a special operating mode called the anti-freeze mode is activated. When the heat pump is in the anti-freeze mode, the temperature of the water in the heating system is limited to 20°C. This means that the water will no longer be heated to higher temperatures.

The anti-freeze mode always uses an additional energy source that you have selected.

– 05
What is automatic mode switch?
+

If the heat pump has the automatic mode switch function enabled, the device will automatically switch between heating and cooling or turn off the heating. This happens when the outside temperature is higher or lower than 12°C at 9:00 PM for three consecutive days.

With this function, the device ensures adequate comfort based on external conditions, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. This way, the system will automatically adjust its operation, providing you with a comfortable temperature based on the external conditions.
