SWISS SCHOOL WITH ZERO CARBON HEATING

The old wood-chip heating system at the Gutenswil School Center had become increasingly inefficient and unreliable. Every winter raised the same question – what if it failed during the coldest days? Instead of investing in outdated technology, the school decided to take a bold step forward and set an example for future generations. They replaced the system with a high-performance KRONOTERM ADAPT MAX heat pump and a new photovoltaic power plant. The result? CO₂-neutral, self-sufficient heating that operates quietly, reliably, and almost cost-free.

Gutenswil School Center in Switzerland has taken a decisive step toward an energy-independent future. Rather than repairing its 25-year-old, failure-prone biomass boiler, the school opted for a complete heating system renovation. At the heart of the new setup is the KRONOTERM ADAPT MAX – a powerful air-to-water heat pump whose exceptional efficiency allows it to run entirely on solar energy produced by the 432 m² rooftop photovoltaic system. Thanks to this combination, the school now heats CO₂-neutral, fully self-sufficiently, and almost silently.

Heating without a carbon footprint

The project centers on the idea of a closed energy loop – a system where all components work together to form an autonomous whole. The rooftop solar plant generates around 100,000 kWh of clean electricity per year, which powers the KRONOTERM ADAPT MAX heat pump. The unit extracts heat from the outdoor air and converts it into energy for space heating and domestic hot water.

Because the heat pump is exceptionally efficient, the entire system operates without fossil fuels, without emissions, and without dependence on external energy sources. The result is a school that heats itself completely CO₂-neutralusing only the energy it produces on site. The project is also economically smart, as long-term heating costs are close to zero.

Silence that supports focus

In a school environment, quiet operation is essential. One of the key requirements of the project was silent performanceand ADAPT MAX delivered. Thanks to its innovative acoustic design, the system operates up to eight times quieter than comparable units. This allows it to be installed right next to the school building without disturbing lessons or student concentration.

Beyond quiet operation, smart control is what makes ADAPT MAX stand out. The system manages up to four heating circuits simultaneouslyfrom radiator to underfloor heatingkeeping every part of the building at the perfect temperature.

Smart control

ADAPT MAX eliminates the need for manual adjustments and reduces the workload for staff.

  • Autonomous regulation: Heating is fully managed through a smart application. Staff can set weekly and daily schedules, with automatic temperature reduction during night hours and holidays. Adaptive regulation ensures that the system operates with maximum efficiency and delivers immediate savings.
  • Remote access: The maintenance team can access the system remotely at any time – meaning that any irregularities can be resolved quickly, safely, and without the need for a physical visit.

Are you planning an energy renovation? Discover how ADAPT MAX can reduce your workload, deliver CO₂-neutral comfort, and increase reliability in your building.
