In Alkoven, Upper Austria, the community wanted to preserve access to primary healthcare after losing its long-time family doctor. This led to the creation of the Humanum Medical-Therapeutic Center, which today brings together doctors, specialists, and therapists across 820 m².
Built with a sustainable timber structure, the center is designed as a modern, energy self-sufficient facility that operates flawlessly every day of the year. To meet these high standards of comfort and reliability, the project team chose the KRONOTERM ETERA geothermal heat pumps – the most efficient solution for heating, cooling, and hot-water production.
ETERA in cascade: double the power, total reliability
At the heart of the system operate two KRONOTERM ETERA heat pumps connected in cascade, working in perfect synchrony and automatically adjusting to demand. This redundant setup ensures that the system never depends on a single unit – if one pump requires maintenance, the other continues operation automatically. Together with a 1000-liter buffer tank, the installation maintains stable temperatures and exceptional efficiency, guaranteeing uninterrupted heat supply – crucial in any medical environment.
Maximum energy efficiency through groundwater use
Groundwater is one of nature’s most stable and reliable energy sources – its temperature remains nearly constant throughout the year. By utilizing this steady source, the ETERA-C system achieves top seasonal efficiency (SCOP 8.48) and provides passive cooling in summer with extremely low energy input. For users, this means minimal running costs and near-silent operation.
Smart control and remote monitoring
The system is managed via an advanced control platform (CNS) that coordinates heating, passive cooling, and ventilation. Each ETERA heat pump includes the KSMpro controller, enabling full integration while maintaining autonomous operation in case of network disturbances. The KRONOTERM online module allows remote monitoring, diagnostics, and performance optimization – ensuring consistent efficiency and absolute reliability.
Solar energy as a natural ally
The geothermal system is supported by a rooftop photovoltaic installation that supplies renewable electricity for the heat pumps. Together, they form a closed energy loop – resulting in a facility with an exceptionally low carbon footprint, minimal operating costs, and outstanding comfort for both patients and staff.
