ARE YOU AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF OUTDATED HEATING APPLIANCES?

Lately, like every winter, we read about numerous accidents and carbon monoxide poisonings. The silent killer, as we call it, is one of the dangers of old and outdated heating devices.

The greatest danger of outdated heating devices is carbon monoxide (formerly known as carbon monoxide), the main product of incomplete combustion of carbon and carbon-containing compounds. Disruptions in combustion indoors that can cause carbon monoxide poisoning can involve all heating devices that draw air from the space in which they are installed. These include natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, extra-light heating oil, and solid fuels such as wood pellets, logs, and coal.

How do you know if you have been exposed to a higher amount of carbon monoxide? The most common symptoms are headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, and dizziness. In addition, carbon monoxide poisoning can cause confusion, disorientation, and visual disturbances. Carbon monoxide poisoning happens more often then you think. According to the American National Library of Medicine ,From 2020 – 2021, the global mortality rate due to unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning was 0·366 per 100 000 population.

USE OF OLD DEVICES IS PROHIBITED

Did you know that the use of old boilers with higher emission values in flue gases has been prohibited since 2018? According to the regulation on the emission of substances into the air from small combustion installations from that year, owners of heating devices must keep measurement protocols for at least five years. The use of wood residues is also prohibited if the values of any hazardous substances contained therein exceed the limit values for pollutants by more than 25 percent. The maximum allowable age of solid fuel devices is 20 years(This applies to Slovenian legislation; for others, please check with the local authorities), provided that air pollutant emissions do not exceed limit values. Liquid fuel stoves may be up to 27 years old only in special cases. In most larger Slovenian municipalities, with the adoption of the air quality plan ordinance, the maximum age of stoves is even two or three years less.

WITH OLD APPLIANCES, THE AIR BECOMES EVEN MORE POLLUTED

Polluted air affects the lives of all living beings and jeopardizes our health. By reducing the number of heating devices that use environmentally harmful fuels, the air quality would significantly improve, consequently enhancing our health and preserving nature.

ENSURE SAFE HEATING AND YOUR HEALTH

Why risk your health and poisoning due to carbon monoxide leaks when you can replace your heating device with a system where this silent killer is not present? Heating with a heat pump is much safer, as it does not release toxic gases and solid particles into the air (or space) during operation. Consequently, it is more environmentally friendly, cheaper in the long run, comfortable, and worry-free.

Cleaner air is the goal of both the entire European Union and Slovenia. Therefore, Eco Fund provides non-refundable financial incentives for replacing old heating stoves with more environmentally friendly heating systems. It offers subsidies of up to 5000 euros for the purchase of a heat pump. Put your health first, forget the fear of carbon monoxide poisoning. Take care of your brighter future and the future of the next generations.
